Need a bit of technical help

In 2003 I had recieved a computer, a gift from my parents, which was about $1,400 at the time, and it's worth today is about half of that.

In 2005 I purchased one of the newer, "state of the art" ATI graphics cards. I knew at the time my PC didn't have comparable specs, and my powersupply might be an issue.

Two weeks after installing the new card (Origionally valued at $400 or so) my computer experienced speratic shut downs. These shutdowns grew worse over time, and my computer would only run about 5 minutes and then do it again, until I couldn't turn it on at all. After that, I picked up a new decent computer.

Four months ago I took a visit to a local computer shop and had it fixed, they said they found the error and fixed it, and rebooted it too. I installed a wide variety of software on it, gathered a package of key components like a monitor and keyboard and so fourth, and intended to sell it for $400.

I had run the computer for about a combined total of about 24 hours, testing the computer and making sure the newer graphics card still worked. I played games, tested nearly all the software, and updated it/defragged/cleaned it up and it was always working fine.

A friend wanted to buy it, I had told her all of its history, included a full package of speakers, monitor, keyboard, and mouse, along with necessary cords, and made sure the computer was working just before I sold it to her. She checked online and found comparable computers at about $800, I sold it to her for $300. I told her if anything went wrong, I'd have a look at it, and just in case the old problems kept occuring, I gave her the origional graphics card.

When I sold it, it was in complete working order and I couldn't fux it up for the life of me. A week after she had owned it, the old problems started re-occuring. She claims the origional graphics card wont fit in, she wont take it to me to let me have a look at it, and she wont seek professional technical assistance for it. She has begun demanding her money back, but I don't have it anymore (Gas, food, got ticketed, et cetera), and I refused to pay her back. I told her I'd been more than reasonable, and sold it in completely working order and I'd still help her fix it.

Now I'm being threatened by her father and herself, and there's a good chance I might be taken to court for it.

I have two questions. How could I fix the computer, so that I could possibly avoid the court action? Also, how might the outcome be in the court?

For technical details, I don't remember too many specs of the computer. It worked FINE before I got the new graphics card. Graphics cards where both AGP

Original card won't fit in?

They are doing it wrong. It was a clean honest sale, and its not your fault if it started to break down again. Tell her and her dad to back the fuck off. They knew what they bought.

Also, I am pretty sure they will lose in court if it ever gets taken there. You never gave any indication that it would work perfectly forever, and you told them its history of malfunctioning. They paid up, and its not your fault that its broken again.

And card slots don't just morph.

I agree. There's really nothing they can legally do about that, especially if there was no contract, reciept, or even verbal agreement that it was and would remain in perfect working order, (which could be loosely defined).  I've had friends mess up my personal desktops after as little as a half hour of use, but as far as hardware goes it's hard to troubleshoot it without being there, because from the sounds of it your friend isn't very technically inclined, or smart at all for that matter.  Tell her you'll repair it, or nothing. Period.

She can't do jack shit, no judge would ever have you pay that if you can get them to admit that you told them upfront that it had a history of malfunction, gave them an enormous discount like that, AND OFFERED TO FIX IT FOR FREE IF ANYTHING WENT WRONG.

Thanks, guys.

I am a little young, the money wouldn't be hard for me to come by but my job isn't giving me enough hours, and I have other things to deal with first.

I feel better about the whole court thing, and I'm waiting for her to make up her mind. Every time I ask her what she's doing with it (between giving it to me to get it fixed, bringing it somewhere to get it fixed, or coming back and demanding a refund) and she says she doesn't know yet.

Not much I can really do at the moment, but I still hope to get a look at the computer regardless. I'm curious as to know the error.

You'd already offered to fix it. They refused. Now their problem.

Furnace them.  They are obviously juden.  That, and accuse them of breaking it... after all why else would they not want it fixed?

Don't change these.
