Best hard drive to buy?

Name: Anonymous 2007-07-10 4:11 ID:QnIyjKwC

Okay, I'm in the market for a hard drive for my desktop. Has to be SATA II, 7,200rpm & with a decent cache size. What brand/model do I go for? I'm looking for something around the 250gb-300gb mark.

Seagate Barracuda (NOT Seagate DiamondMax)

Seagate and Western Digital are your best brands...

Honestly, I would recommend spending just a bit more, and going with a Western Digital Caviar SE16.
400gb.
16mb Cache.
7200 rpm.
Find one on NewEgg brand new for $176.
Ebay? idk...

You can find 500gb drives on newegg or at frys, and various other websites for 100 bucks.  plus shipping or tax sometimes.  Spend six bucks and get an HD fan to attach to it. It may break after 3-4 years but I've never had a HD die on me in about seven years of using them.  You'll notice a significant difference if you go with a raptor drive with your OS on it.

all the big brands are basically the same.

10,000 rpm = waaay shorter lifetime. aka do not raid 0, guaranteed   fail.

Do your research. Don't listen to random hype coming from every direction.

Got something more recent, failure?

As said before, Seagate and Western Digital are the best money can buy.

And if you have the opportunity to give some airflow to them, do it!  Server at work has all its ten HDs in a custom-made contraption with fans constantly blowing at them.  The drives are barely above room temperature and not a single one of them has failed yet.

Don't change these.
