mp4 video

I torrented an mp4 file, all the comments on it saying that it worked perfectly and calling it great.  So there's nothing wrong with the file itself, but I can't play it at all.  Google told me that RealPlayer would play it fine, but it doesn't.  It told me taht VLC would play it fine, but VLC only gives me the audio, and about 1% of the video--the timer on the top left.  What should I use to play this shit?
