This is only my second time doing a complete computer overhaul (new CPU, mobo, all that), and I thought I could handle it myself but apparently not. My system shuts off a few moments after I turn it on. The first time I turned it on after installing everything, it lasted a good minute before crashing, but every time after that it wouldn't last over 20 seconds before shutting off. I'm thinking it's a heat issue, in the BIOS it said the CPU was running at 52 degrees celcius. Since i'm no expert on operating temperatures, I don't know how bad that is, but i'm pretty sure it's not good. Any ideas? Maybe more thermal compound or something?
When you don't have a clue what the problem is generally the only method is to remove all the components and add them one by one till you find which one causes a problem.
I looked at a few sites for a power supply wattage calculator, and one said I needed around 650W, and i'm running only 500W...could that be part of it?
Yes, not enough power could be the problem. Again, try removing components. This is your primary testing method. I'm guessing that without any drives and without a video card the power usage would be below 500W? See how long your box runs without them.

I don't think your voltage would be a problem. It's possible though. I've always pushed it to the limit and never had a problem like this. I have the athon 64x2 5600+ 2.8 with SLI nvidia 7950GT, asus m2n32-sli deluxe motherboard, with 4 hard drives, four case fans and four HD fans. and a dvd burner. the case is a really shitty one with probably a more generic 500w power supply. I have about five or six 4pin molex (power supply) Y adapters. the power supply also doesn't have the 20+4pin power connector that my motherboard supports.
You might want to try what the others suggested, as well as making sure your CPU has enough thermal paste slopped on. Not too much though. try sticking a powerful desk fan next to the side of the case. Try to see if anything metal isn't touching anything it shouldn't be on your main board.
