Safety of Torrenting

Are there any safety tips for safe torrenting? Is there such a thing as virus-free torrenting?

A virus cannot be included "on top of" an iso (Unless it ends in an extension Windows recognizes as executable and you're stupid enough to execute it).  It may be included "in" the iso.  Get 7-zip and extract the iso.  Run the extracted contents through a virus scan.

If you are really paranoid about the contents of the iso being corrupted/infected:
 - buy the game
 - Or, buy the game
 - You could buy the game
 - Get VMWare/virtual PC/QEMU, set it up properly, and run the game in a VM.  If the VM survives, you should be okay.
 - Image your HD prior to running it and restore image if shit fucks up
 - Did I mention you could buy the game
 - You could also steal it from Wal-Mart
 - You could also buy it using a stolen credit card or money you've stolen elsewhere.
 - Buy it from Wal-Mart, take note of how package is sealed, take disc+key, reseal package in method that will fool stupid Wal-Mart employees, get your money back.
 - Or just have a black person return it.  Usually they can get anything they want returned.
 - Try pawning stuff you don't need for money.  Like your computer.
 - Other ways to get money: sperm donor, prostiution, selling drugs, getting a job, donate blood, extortion, blackmail.
 - Install it on a friend's computer and see if his shit fucks up.  He's getting a free game, use that to distract him from possible virus
 - If you go to school, install it on one of their computers.  After testing, DBAN the drive.  (DUR DIS COMPUTAR NO WORKIE POPERLY)
 - Substitute "work" for school in previous statement, rinse, repeat.
 - Finally, the sure thing for safety and security is to buy the game.

Um, leaving the house is a major pain in the ass.  Your advice are very bad IMO.

If you DO buy the game, here's how to easily install it:
1) Rip the game.
2) Download a couple different ISOs.
3) Compare the files contained within all of them.
4) If any differ, in any combination, throw the game away and burn it, also buy a new computer because you inserted the CD when you ripped it, and there just might be an unknown exploit that runs automatically.  Also, if you run the ISO through anything, you might have compromised your computer due to an error in an ISO parser.
5) Else, install whichever version you prefer -- I prefer the downloaded versions because they are ripped and distributed with love.

If there is a virus in a torrent it will be in all copies: as the individual pieces of the file are hashed it would be hard for an attacker to sneak a virus into an otherwise okay torrent by sending you bad pieces.  That is to say, you really have to worry about trusting the uploader, not about trusting the other seeders/peers.

A good solution is to find a reputable (using the term loosely) torrent site that requires registration and has feedback mechanisms.  If others have downloaded it without trouble then that is a good indicator.

Torrentspy.com has reviews of torrents they have. there isn't as many torrents as Torrentreactor, but alot of times if there's a problem people will bitch about it in the comments.

Yeah you should normally check the comments, if applicable. Especially things that seem shady like transformers dvdrip. torrentz.com is a good site that searches multiple torrent sites.   

If you're going to buy the game, why would you download copies of it just to compare files? The only reason you should buy a game is to install it and steal the cdkeys so you can then return it. You can also do this at target, as long as you don't mess up the seal too much, and depending on the employee you can  just say it was like that when you bought it and it was the last copy, if they even notice or care.
