Random Hangs, no idea whats happening

Name: Anonymous 2007-07-06 15:48 ID:OaXKQYFa

so in the past 3 days my computer has started randomly hanging, complete lock up.  Nothing responds, not even numlock/capslock/scroll lock lights on the keyboard will go on or off, and there is often looping sound.  This hang continues until i manually turn off the computer.

ive run seagates app to test my hdd's, and they passed all the tests.  Ive run memtest, and my ram is fine. ive checked the temperatures for video card, mobo, cpu's etc, and they are all within acceptable limits.

i've reinstalled and reformatted 3 times, first time i reinstalled vista, then reformatted and installed xp and the same thing happened, so i zero filled the drive to makes sure that it wasnt some kind of weird lingering software issue and then put vista back on.  I added another to put more air over my cpu/chipset/ram and the system ran fine for over an hour last night, but then after being up for about 30 mins today, it hung again.  After rebooting fromt he hang it hung again about 2 mins after boot, and has now been going for about 20 mins.

any ideas wtf is going on?  any diagnostics i should run?

What programs are running at the lock up?
Anything that seems to coincide with the lock ups?
What's on the screen at lock up? Screwed up video could point
to a faulty card.
If all else fails try running a Linux LiveCD to see
if it's hardware related otherwises it's probably software being
lame.

If you've got a voltmeter and are sure enough to know what you're doing, try checking the PSU's voltages (the voltages reported by the mainboard are not reliable sources of information, as they are only going to be off-spec if something is HORRIBLE off-spec, so use a voltmeter to measure the voltages!);
The yellow wires carry +12V, red +5V and black is GND. Check the voltages during startup, while under load etc.
Strange behaviour is extremely hard to diagnose, especially if disks and RAM are all right, so it could just be the PSU. If you've got a spare PSU, try installing it into your computer to see if the problems still occur.
PSUs getting defective is especially ugly, as your computer just gets unstable and behaves erratically. Until I found out my PSU was defective, I had swapped a mainboard and a HDD, so before delving into swapping a bunch of expensive components, look at the PSU.

Core 2 Duo
Here's your problem, the Crash 2 Desktop processor fucking sucks.  Get a real processor for real men like a DEC Alpha or GTFO.

the problem isnt windows, my guess is his drivers are screwed up. there is also a chance that his hardware is defective and the diagnostics arent picking it up, or his hardware is conflicting. we need more info as to what he was doing to the computer prior to it getting hung. ID:ZskLR0Ol has probably the best solution.

OP Here

heres the weird part, i would have thought it was drivers as well, but as i pointed out: not only have i reformatted, i switched OS's as well.  As far as programs running, it doesnt really matter, it has happened while i left it sitting at the login screen.

as for screen, whatever i was currently doing is still displayed, it is completely frozen until i manually reset it.

i get sweet discounts on PSU's at work, so i guess i'll pick one up and swap mine out.

as far as conflicting hardware goes, ive been running the same configuration for over 2 months, and had no problems with it up until a few days ago.

This could point to two (possibly related) problems: The PSU and probably--I don't know the weather conditions, but considering it's getting summer--heat. Have you tried cleaning your computer  so everything is free of dust and checked the temperatures of various components?

OP again:

so i threw in an ancient PCI video card (3D Rage Pro ftw)  and my system has been stable for over 6 hours... so i guess the problem is either my video card or my psu.

i hope its the psu, those are cheaper to replace :(

And to keep everyone updated: i put my real video card back in, and everything has been fine then.

i still have no idea wtf the problem was.

When I first received my video card it was defective, it was within 30 days of my purchase and under 1 year warranty or something like that, so if you just got the card see if you can exchange it for a new one of the same model.

OP is back!

my compy is fucked again, this is driving me crazy.

im going to switch out the psu probably tomorrow, and try to borrow a video card from someone to test that out too.

if that doesnt work, i'll just become an hero.

it's supposed to be ironic.

anyway, back to the problem: i put in a new 500w psu, it worked fine for the night, and now we are back to random lockups.

what the fuck.

Prehaps you should look the software you're running.  Make sure all your drivers for your motherboard are up to date including the bios.  Then make sure the videocard driver is up to date as well. See if anyone else has a similar setup (through google) that's been giving them problems.
