a good utility that will convert filenames with japanese characters or any unicode to standard filenames?

just rename them with the rename option its not that hard, unless you were born without hands and eyes, then it will

You're right.  Perhaps "standard" was the wrong choice of words.  ASCII, UTF-8, cross-platform-friendly, moonspeakless, shit that doesn't make Samba puke, that's what I meant.

But forget it.  Tarring and untarring the files in 7-zip did the trick.  Converted it all to underscores.
