Core duo

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-20 12:47 ID:/EwWzwGo

So i'm building a second pc just for games, and i've heard a lot of good things about Intel's core duo line for this, anyone have any experience with this?  The prices aren't bad either, between tigerdirect and newegg there's always one on sale.  If you have any other recommendations (besides no vista, obviously) for a gaming pc, please throw that in too.  Mind you, i'm on a budget, maybe around 1300 dollars max.

In my opinion, you should just look for an AMD product, they're fairly reliable, and they're a lot more inexpensive than Intel.

E6400 will do you fine (Core 2 Duo) though an E6600 is the real sweet spot. 2Gb RAM. Big arse SATA drive (raid is for posers if it's a game machine). Minimum 7600GS vid card. Dedicated sound (5.1 is still fine and cheap as poo). 500w PSU.

is a dedicated sound card really that big a deal? i mean, if you play in regular stereo headphones.

You don't have to go back 4 years to witness AMD still on top.  Just think back to around 1.5 years ago when X2 was punishing Pentium D.  It was only after that when Intel was able to catch up to AMD from the Coppermine vs Athlon Classic days.

Anyway, up to a certain price cutoff (somewhere far below $1000), an OC'd AMD-based gaming system will outperform an OC'd Intel-based gaming system at the same price, because the lower cost of AMD CPUs & stable mobos allows one to spend more on a better graphics card and RAM (about $100 spread in favor of AMD, considering equal motherboard functionality).  By the same token, a comparable system in terms of performance will cost less on AMD arch, up to a certain performance threshold.

At $1300, however, of course a C2D system will be better than any X2 or FX system.  Core 2 Duo is simply the superior architecture for anyone with no budget, or a budget as high as this.

Budget is on the side of intel. Stop misleading this poor fucker.

Depends. If you want a really budget CPU, a brisbane 3600+ is only $59. With an overclock, it can keep up with an E6400. I got an AM2 system to see what K8L will bring. If you can afford to spend more than $100, Core2 is your best bet. Though I can't guarantee an upgrade path for socket T. But if you could get a Kentsfield Xeon later, you probably wouldn't care about upgrading anyways for some time.

The E6600 does seem worth it for only 50 more, people seem to be universally for it.  tigerdirect has it for 249.99

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2341562&Sku=CP1-DUO-E6600

On the note of dedicated sound card, it seems cheaper to invest in a mobo that has 5.1/7.1 built in, as long as it's 5.1 or higher I wouldn't be looking to upgrade.  Been looking at motherboards for about an hour now, talk about in over my head!  But as stated earlier, going for 2GB RAM, it's pretty easy to find it on sale for a great price if I actually put forth the effort to find it.

While I was on tigerdirect I noticed 8600 SLI compatible cards are in the 160 range, which isn't really that bad.  I don't have any experience with nvidia cards after 7800, so not really sure what i'd be getting into performance wise.  But if it's SLI, I can always double up later, just need to get the right psu right from the get-go.

It seems the more I look, the more confusing this gets!

This Core 2 Duo thing is just two of the same old Pentium 4 thing, a marketing stunt, to get people buying Intel instead of AMD. But we all know AMD offers better performance and lower prices.

You're thinking Pentium D. Not core2. Even some PentiumD's were at least die-shrunk (Presler) so you had better wattage.

Name: OP 2007-06-21 16:14 ID:OmKBCsl/

Well I appreciate the Intel vs AMD fight, since it's never been done before, but I'm pretty much thinking to go with the Core2.  I've had some great experiences with AMD, but on my budget the price:performance of Intel has the upper hand at the moment.

Also, since I made this topic my PC died (lol) so i'm on an old compaq running ubuntu.  If this doesn't show the urgency of needing to build another, I don't know what does.

On a serious note, does anyone have any mobo suggestions to go with a core2?  There are so many proclaiming to be "Optimized" for it.

Screw the 8600 variants at that price.  You can get a Crossfire-capable X1950 XT for only $180.

That and /comp/ is like 98% retards, so noone notices when you troll anyways. You just blend in with the crowd.

The 8800GTS is so much more powerful than the 8600 cards if you can afford it. If not, you want an 8600GTS (not GT, GTS) or an X1950XT. Depending on which one you can find cheaper, though the X1950 will probably do better at higher resolutions (256bit memory)

Yeah I was thinking to wait until I can afford one decent 8800, then just SLI it up later when I can afford a second.  The X1950 Seems nice too, a bit pricey as well...  But hey, i'm using an X1550PCI now so I should take what I can get.
