mp3 player + IM on 400Mhz CPU

Ok, I started a thread here about using a 400Mhz AMD-K6 2 based computer (with 640MB 133Mhz SDRAM + a GeForce 4 128MB AGP) for video streaming purposes some weeks ago.  Didn't work out.  Needs moar megahertz.  However, computer seems totally usuable for something, just don't know quite what yet.

So I'm installing Windows XP on it.  So far so good.  Right now I'm installing basic stuff on it. 

For web browsing, I installed Opera, and it's fuck fast on this shitty CPU compared to even IE.  Makes it almost look like I'm using a reasonably modern computer.

I was wondering what Anonymous suggests on a machine of this caliber for the purposes of music playback and instant messaging.  Can't use Pidgin because it crashes.

Furthermore, on an unrelated note, I noticed that the word "might", when used in any message or literature from Microsoft, is Microsoft's code word for "you're fucked." 

LOOOOOL 400 MHz can't even run DOS on that I bet.

This better not be that fucking media center PC again...

Use windows media player?

486DX66 can play mp3 from the command line, Linux can do everything u want from the bash shell, don't need fancy graphix!

Um, DOS ran well on 25Mhz 386's.  400Mhz is way overkill for DOS.  Unless you want to run emulators.

Just use the damn thing as a router and stop bugging us about your ancient trash.

If you MUST use an ancient system you can use naim as an AIM client, and mpg123 for audio. Minimum system resource useage. I guarantee it.

i had 96mb of ram on a 400mhz celeron back in the day and it was good enough to play diablo2 and mp3s at the same time

MPC is a nice & clean movie player, but it sucks for audio because of its extremely basic playlist interface (unless all you need to do is double-click m3us and expect them to play in listed order).  Foobar is perfect for anything more demanding.

Also, 133 MHz RAM doesn't make a lick of difference on that system.  You can take advantage of any spare 100 MHz CL2 RAM you might have around, if you ever need more than your current 640 MB (doubtful).

Music should work with nearly everything on it :) just try through everything.
