downsides to optical mice?

Name: Anonymous 2007-05-26 20:32 ID:Vt0tVdnV

So I'm sick of using ball mice, and how easily they gum up even after you clean them.  i've been thinking of getting an optical mouse

do optical mice have any common problems of their own I should know about?

Hi, I recently purchased an HP Notebook dv6305us because of the rebate offer, of course, it came with Lamesta, so upon getting the notebook, I formatted it and installed XP Pro. Problem. Upon booting the laptop back up, I found the audio drivers do not work, and several other drivers are missing. The laptop recognizes a handful of unknown and other devices for which it has no drivers. I've checked HP's site for both the Vista and XP drivers for this notebook. I didn't see that they had an audio driver for XP though.

This is what I saw on the device manager for missing drivers:
Base System Device
Base System Device
Base System Device
Network Controller
Other PCI Bridge Device
SM Bus Controller
Unknown Device (? wut)
Video Conroller (VGA Compatible)

Which of the drivers off of HP's site should I download?

they work like shit if you've replaced the surface of your desk with a full-length mirror, or if you cover the lasery bit with black paint.  otherwise you should be fine.

OP, how do you plan on using this mouse? Do you game? If so, try not to bargain-basement it and get something decent. If not, whatever is on sale this week should be splendid.

OP, if this was an imageboard, i would have an image just for you.

you're an idiot. no one needs that 10 bajillion dpi bullshit. a $10 optical mouse is fine for anyone.

i purchased a logitech MX and its no-fucking-better than the $10 opti mouse that came with the system in the first place.

all this 1600+dpi bullshit is just that, bullshit.

fucking "gamer mice" are just as retarded as illuminated fans/cases/mice, no one really needs them, just a cheap nerdy alternative to all the old school virtual-penis enhancers.

that aside, 5+ year old ms intelli optical is made of win and god.

Don't use a mouse. Get a trackball. That's where the good shit is.

My Logitech optical mouse has two LEDs.  WTF.  Whatever, it was free.

Every basic MS and Logi OEM optical mouse is pretty much 100% reliable.

Don't use an optical mouse on highly reflective surfaces or fine, irregular patterns (like woodgrain).

Some mousemats fuck up optical mice. At my mom's place I have to turn the mousemat upside-down before using the mouse otherwise it's really unresponsive. It's got some kind of hologram worked into it so I guess that's what fucking with it.

Otherwise optical mice are superior. And yeah, you don't need some kind of ubermouse for your gaming. It's more important that it has all the buttons you want and that it fits your hand comfortably than that it has thousands of dpi. You won't notice the difference anyway.

i still have a serial mouse from the early ninties that works fine and guess what... it has a cord and a ball. I also just got a 40$ wireless  optical mouse( and im not going to lie, i REALLY liked it) and my girlfriend dropped it once...it died.

Moral of the story? if you can live with a  cord and ball. do it.
tough as balls baby
