downsides to optical mice?

So I'm sick of using ball mice, and how easily they gum up even after you clean them.  i've been thinking of getting an optical mouse

do optical mice have any common problems of their own I should know about?

fucking "gamer mice" are just as retarded as illuminated fans/cases/mice, no one really needs them, just a cheap nerdy alternative to all the old school virtual-penis enhancers.

that aside, 5+ year old ms intelli optical is made of win and god.
