Self Destructing Drive

Name: Anonymous 2007-05-15 10:32 ID:OX5jJnAA

Okay I recently managed to get a few hard drives, what I really have been wanting to do is make a self dustructing drive. I have done some thinking about it, and I would perfef if the ammount of damage done was limited to the drive its self, so no gun powder or thermite. I was condering somthing like a electro mag that I could put inside the drive case to wipe the bastard.

So anyone have any suggestions?

Here's a suggestion, don't bother.

Install Windows

go with the electro magnet.

Don't save your CP

This guy I know used to co-admin one of the now-deceased private torrent trackers, he had shitloads of illegal stuff on his pc. Anyway he basically said that a few of his contacts had some program that allegedly does some shit to the motors of the drive to permanently fuck it up in a few seconds (for if there is a raid)

Probably total bullshit though

Use thermite. It will turn your drives into molten metal and shit... burns right through them.

Ah, shit. Didn't read everything...
If you don't want to ruin it with explosives, you'll have to use something like what you described but there is a chance it will ruin the drive anyway.
An another option is to use some kind of disk eraser multiple times. It's slow but won't kill it.

Why not wipe the drive by low-level rewriting it with random data several times? Hiren's Boot CD has tools for that. Or just any Linux using shred as root on the device itself. Then you can keep using the drive.

OP here.. Yea I was looking for somthing fast that would kill the drive without starting a fire or distroying the whole thing. Kind of a "kill switch".

Sick thing is I have no use for the thing, it just sounded cool to me, lol. After I make one and test it I may just make another and never use it.

Well, I'm not sure about this idea, but here goes...

How about develop some alternative destructive mechanism onto the hard disk itself using the function it already is capable of? What I mean is, why not develop a way to hack the write/read speed of the disk to spin at crazy -- CRAZY speeds and have the read/write tool to scratch the fuck out of the surface till it's unreadable?

You'd need some sort of an alternative power source to crank up the RPMs to cause damage, and then a switch on that power source.

This is the kind of shit I was hoping to hear

too bad i can read data from drives that have been burnt in fires or even been in explosions...

Dumbass.
Hard drives work on the Bernoulli principle, in that the high speed of the rotation is what keeps the rw head afloat.

You need to make the drive spin at like 1RPM. and then move the heads back and forth.

>>13
Yeah, but not all of it.

I can't wait until solid state hard drives take over.  Those would be easy to kill.  Remove battery = complete destruction.

Like my solid state *flash* disk?

I'm talking about the ones that mostly consist of battery-backed DRAM.

Take plastic explosive, roll in hand (Like Play-Doh) until it becomes a thin roll, then remove top cover of hard drive (Don't forget to rig a detonator, and make sure u are in some sort of dust-free enviroment when u remove the cover), and apply around the outer edge of the inside of the drive. Also, drill a hole in the top cover, then seal with sillicone RTV gasket-maker from auto zone. By doing this, you create sort of a blow hole, when said plastic explosives are detonated. Or just get a fucking magnet. Assy Potato Lasers.

FUCKING end.

did you read >>13 at all? explosives arent a guarentee.

now an electro magnet...

Name: Anonymous 2007-05-18 9:53 ID:q90QTpYQ

Well, stay away from explosives or any explicit tampering if you're doing this for *criminal* reasons as damaging the drive to where it's clearly apparent you destroyed it because it was evidence in court will not bode well for the magistrate/judge and or jury.

ITT: We refuse to use DBAN.

Use an external hard drive and keep it in a microwave oven on your desk.

Name: Anonymous 2007-05-19 10:10 ID:RDAnNXPk

>>21
OP here, already tried a microwave. Only thing it did was kill the microwave.

Name: Anonymous 2007-05-19 12:44 ID:yJk74e2E

Throw it down the fucking sewer

Name: Anonymous 2007-05-19 13:05 ID:yvWbsDgq

Melt it in acid and pour it into the ocean (out at sea) over a large area.

Name: Anonymous 2007-05-20 0:54 ID:bc5Bl4VL

Put something REALLY important and irreplaceable on the hard drive. Even better if it is school related. Sit back and watch meltdown.

That always seems to destroy my hard drives.

That wouldn't work, you'd at least have to launch the melted remains off into space.

No, ITT pedophiles refuse to use an encrypted partition + a linux live CD.

>>27
That'd be a bad idea.  Extraterrestrials can easily restore a melted harddrive, on Terra we have no such technology.

Don't change these.
