Linux: Good for developers, terrible for users.

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-15 21:39 ID:nqh/KErU

Yeah, Linux zealots are now saying "oh installing is so easy, just do apt-get install package or emerge package": Yes, because typing in "apt-get" or "emerge" makes so much more sense to new users than double-clicking an icon that says "setup".

Linux zealots are far too forgiving when judging the difficultly of Linux configuration issues and far too harsh when judging the difficulty of Windows configuration issues. Example comments:

User: "How do I get Quake 3 to run in Linux?"
Zealot: "Oh that's easy! If you have Redhat, you have to download quake_3_rh_8_i686_010203_glibc.bin, then do chmod +x on the file. Then you have to su to root, make sure you type export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 but ONLY if you have that latest libc6 installed. If you don't, don't set that environment variable or the installer will dump core. Before you run the installer, make sure you have the GL drivers for X installed. Get them at [some obscure web address], chmod +x the binary, then run it, but make sure you have at least 10MB free in /tmp or the installer will dump core. After the installer is done, edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and add a section called "GL" and put "driver nv" in it. Make sure you have the latest version of X and Linux kernel 2.6 or else X will segfault when you start. OK, run the Quake 3 installer and make sure you set the proper group and setuid permissions on quake3.bin. If you want sound, look here [link to another obscure web site], which is a short HOWTO on how to get sound in Quake 3. That's all there is to it!"

User: "How do I get Quake 3 to run in Windows?"
Zealot: "Oh God, I had to install Quake 3 in Windoze for some lamer friend of mine! God, what a fucking mess! I put in the CD and it took about 3 minutes to copy everything, and then I had to reboot the fucking computer! Jesus Christ! What a retarded operating system!"

So, I guess the point I'm trying to make is that what seems easy and natural to Linux geeks is definitely not what regular people consider easy and natural. Hence, the preference towards Windows.

Fuck YOU and fuck YOU.  First of all, Linux has SEVERAL one-click-and-install formats, they are called RPM and DEB.  Second of all, Quake 3 wasn't ever intended for Linux.  It's just  like getting software not intended for Windows working on it. Third, executable installers are fuckgay and a major security issue.  So shut up.  Enjoy your assrape courtesy Bill Gates.

LOL Lunix fanboy.

I love Linux, love it to death, but I would never recommend it to someone who didn't have years of experience with computers (ie, just about everybody).

Lunix is great if you want a stable, secure operating system and Windows is great if you want to get something done.

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-16 6:43 ID:AAJ6M9Tu

Also, >>11 is exactly right. I cannot tell you how many times I've had to do that, and not just for ported software: things made to work in Lunix.

Why are you guys using retarded distributions like Gentoo, Red Hate, Ubuntu, etc. that make things as hard as possible for the users when you have the extremely simple alternative Arch Linux which makes everything so simple it'll be done before you even think of doing it!

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-16 9:16 ID:wgMIgXIK

You, my fellow Lunix user, have been trolled. Not only that, but it was copypasta, which makes me think you should murk loar.

>>15
I get things done on Lunix better than I do on Windows. I think TODAY's Kubuntu is harder to install or use than any Windows ever was for typical home use (in fact, a 486 with Netscape 4.0 would be good enough for the stupid shit most lusers do), but of course it doesn't have games.

>>14 Linux Distributions: They all look the same but they can't decided on a universal installer.  LOL, freedom.

Fixed.

On OS X, you would only have to drag the application from the CD to your applications folder, and it would just work.

$5000 please.

You are kidding arent you ? Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

*sigh* this thread is made of so much fail and wasted effort.  Seriously, I'm getting reamed for having a USB keyboard?  A USB KEYBOARD?!  Really, maybe I'd understand if USB ports were at a premium and I didn't actually have you know, EIGHT of them.  Also, power consumption?  Yeah, I'm going to make my system unstable because of the negligible amount of power my damn keyboard takes.  Sorry I'm an idiot for wanting to read my keyboard at night so it's lighted.  I must be a complete fag.  Sorry I found my $5 PS/2 IBM keyboard uncomfortable to type on.  So since I have my keyboard hooked up, now I can only hook up...my mouse, my external hard drive...eerr, make that six of them.  All at once.  Hell, make that six USB fondue pots.  No, six USB calculators.  Just in case one breaks.

Vista is the Future. Its clearly evident that vista is the future.

One only has to watch TV for a short period of time and see the advertising.

WOW !!

I personally love the part where the young man is taking a stroll in the delightful snow covered streets, and sees firsthand a young deer with a gleefull glint in its eye. It sends a shiver down my spine. WOW is all I can say.

Vista is clearly the future of enterprise computing.
