Cable modem keeps freezing up

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-10 19:22 ID:EqENOOPg

I have a Motorola SB5101 cable modem connected via USB to a machine for internet access. Problem is, the stupid modem keeps freezing up. It started after three months, first once or twice a week, but eventually it grew more frequent, to the point that in the last 7 hours it happened five times. A google search turned up that this particular model doesn't get along with USB, but there is no way for me to connect it via an ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

usb sucks, it uses processor. get an enet card, don't  bug your isp, and quit bitching.

also modems don't freeze, they reboot themselves, if the lights on your modem stay the same guess what? the modem is not the stupid one. if you bought that modem instead of renting from your isp, you're a moron, modem rental is between 2 and 6 bucks a month so you can afford that... and if that one stops working or upon your arbitrary request the isp will give you a new one free.

The lights don't "stay the same" - the PC activity light stops flashing and just... glows eerily. And the only way to get the connection back is to power cycle the modem (since it doesn't have a restart button and won't let me into its config interface). Also, I can't get an ethernet card, because the machine already has one - it is used for a home network to share the modem's connection so that I can get internet access on MY machine and post this little piece of text. So there you have it.

Is there a law against having 2?

Errrr... I was told that putting in two cards would cause them to conflict with each other.

Okay, I bought another ethernet card (OEM), put it in the machine and windows failed to recognize it. When I tried installing the driver manually, the system hung up and now hangs up on windows startup whenever the card is inserted.

You are a failure

Damn, how come no one mentioned that it's probably overheating because modems have the shittiest cooling, and tend to gather dust in ther cavernous husks?  Notably, Netgear routers tend to do this too.

It's funny 'cause the cable modem is freezing by the heat...

Don't change these.
