A few questions (mostly about boot.ini)

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-06 2:16 ID:/CKF716+

1. (this is dead serious) I have a a winXP machine. i'm gonna wipe one of the partition drives, and i would like to install windows 1.0 on it so i can dual boot into it.  how do i edit my boot.ini file to do this?

2. same as above, but when i'm done laughing at the past, i would like to stick win98 or win95 on that partition, so i can play me some mechwarrior 2.

in b4 linux, wine, opera, etc.

Also, are there any NTFS drivers for said ancient OS? it'd save me some copying form drive to drive?  Will any of this shit even run on dual core system? How will Windows 1.0 fare with a gig of ram?

windows 1.x runs on top of dos, and dos 3.30 or equivalent, I believe.

so you will have to get dos 3.30 and install it.  dos only works from the first partition on the disk, and dos 3.30 can only handle up to 32mb partitions.  your boot.ini/ntldr can reside on a fat16 partition though.

you're looking at a reformat/repartition no matter what, so if you reformat, do it, install dos 3.30 first, reserve enough space to later convert it to a bigger fat32 partition for windows, and then install winxp on the partition above

eg:
partition(0): Primary;FAT16-32MB
partition(1): Unused;994MB
partition(2): Primary;NTFS(WinXP)-rest of disk

then after you are done messing with win1.x you can delete partition(0), and make it a full 1GB FAT32 partition for Win9x.

installing XP over DOS should go automatically, you shouldn't need to edit the boot.ini file.

btw after you install Win9x you will have to rewrite the bootsector/bootfiles with a FIXBOOT from the recovery console
