I'm setting up a torrent box to conserve power, but I don't want the torrents running during the day when the internet is actually being used.
To get the computer to shut down at a specified time I'm sure is easy to figure out.
What I'm interested in is having the computer turn on at a set time.
I've already got everything to run automatically from boot, I just would like to have it power on on it's own.

Are there any current products that do this, or instructions on how to easily make one?

Make a robot that pushes the button, hook it up to an alarmclock

Why not just not have it download or upload during certain times?  I know utorrent lets you do that.

well, the main goal here of having a specific computer for torrents is to save electricity here.
The house is already running 6 computers, all of which are power-hungry beasts.

I would like it to be off when it's not being used to save power, and if I can get it to be completely automated in turning on and off, that would be the best.

better to buy a lightweight computer and have it run all the time, than turn a computer on and off every day and get monthly component failures.

All wonderful solutions that I have already considered, but have rejected for various reasons. Mostly money.

If the computer has a wake-on-lan feature, then have another computer switch it on.  There is a program called PowerOff for windows that lets you do this.
