Japanese IME not working in XP

I'm trying to get Microsoft's Japanese IME working on my Windows XP laptop. I had no problem using it in 2K. If I select Japanese in the language bar nothing changes. I don't get icons or menus to select ASCII, kana, etc.. Help?

Did you install support for east asian languages first? If not you'll only have some  pseudo input.

I believe so. I can read Japanese files, run Jap programs, etc...

Support for eastasian languages is checked but greyed out.

dont know if this will solve your problem but try this.

control panel > regional and language options > languages tab

click on details then near the bottom of the new window there is a button for the language bar preferences, check first option.
