I just bought a new 1GB USB memory stick. I put it in my computer and a little dialog box pops up in Japanese. Now I can't use the stupid thing because it insists on installing...something, but it can't because I can't read the stupid installation dialogs because they're in Japanese. I made sure the "language for non-Unicode programs" was on English, reset my computer and it's still in Japanese. Any ideas?

Just reformat it. If it's new, as you say, you've got nothing to lose. It'll get rid of whatever software was bundled with it.

Turn off autoplay on that drive. As a matter of fact, you should probably kill autoplay entirely.

Well I've discovered, via some crazy little talking thingy that had a language option, that it takes my desktop and applications and puts them on other computers, etc. I really don't need a portable workspace, so...yeah, think I'll go with the reformat idea.
Assuming XP: Right click the drive, go to the AutoPlay, click the radio button "Select an action to perform:", then click "Take no action", and hit the OK button.
Autoplay is one of the worst "features" to ever see the light of day. It's the kind of shit created by corporations for total morons who shouldn't be using a computer in the first place. Every "automatic", "smart" feature is braindamaged in more than one way and WILL cause trouble. Bullshit for bullshit. Get rid of it. Avoid Windows and Macs.
