I downloaded some font pack with over 9000 fonts. Don't wanna install all of them, any recommendations as to what fonts are a must have, maybe a site with some kind of font toplist or whatever?
If it's a massive font pack it's probably filled with nothing but free crap. Download torrents with fonts from specific foundries and you'll be fine.
As for fonts you want:
* Helvetica
* Times
* Univers
That's about it.

FixedSys
Lucida Console (otherwise Windows XP will crash when it crashes because it can't find the font)
MS Mincho
That's it.

I went through a bunch of font collections the other day and I came up with the following as fonts I actually use often in various contexts:
LeMonde Livre
Adobe Jenson Pro
Myriad Pro
VAGRounded BT
Warnock Pro
Though really all you need for general web\wordprocessing work is Helvetica, Georgia and (my favourite serif Mac font) Hoefler Text.

Get stuff that's from an actual commercial foundry (Adobe, Linotype,...). As far as free fonts go, except for pros who give them away (Larabie,...) they are consistently shit.

Fixedsys sucks sure it looks traditional and it's small, but it doesn't support Unicode, it's not antialiased, and it's NOT SCALABLE, which means that it's a BITMAP FONT.
