Powerbook Trouble

Hey, I have a powerbook g4 titanium 550mhz. It was given to me used and with a fried internal harddrive. I have a 30 gb external that shows up in the mac os x installation program but after I install it I can't boot from my external what do I do. I also have the installation cd for os 9 if that is any help to me.
