Dynamic ISP

Dear /comp/,
We recently got a new cable modem (Surfboard SB5100E). Prior to this, we had to "dial up" to the ISP to get a connection. Every time we performed this dialing, our IP would change. Ever since we got a connection that is made as soon as Windows is booted, our IP has become static. Does this mean that my modem is unable of getting a new IP assigned to it (whether it be disabled or just imposssible), or did my shitty ISP lock my IP? If it's simply a setting for the modem, can we change this?

Do your modem logs say anything about the DHCP lease time?

I take it the modem asks for a new IP but the ISP doesn't give one?

what you had before was a PPPoE connection (or WAN miniport it may be called in XP).
now you're just using normal DHCP, most cable ISPs will use a MAC (physical) address of the modem (or the cable line that goes to your home from their local nodes) to assign IP addresses and these dont change as often but will every few weeks (for example I'm on RR and can have a 24.x.x.x or 65.x.x.x address every so often)

I've had this IP address for nearly a year :(

not totally uncommon if you leave it on all the time.
if you can spare the time offline, do a dhcp release before going to bed or something and turn the modem off. then the next morning or whenever, do a renew. this isn't a sure fire way to get a new ip btw.

you must be a troll that gets b& alot because most people would be happy to have the same ip for that long.
