Hosts file and port mapping for web servers

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-21 10:25 ID:wyGVwppN

Got a little web server going on.  But, I don't want to open up port 80 on my firewall for various security reasons, of course.

I have an secondary port, let's call it port 9000 (which it ISN'T so don't even try.)   .... (I said stop it!)  Router takes that 9000 and points it to a protected server. Said server redirects that port 9000 to port 80 and sends it off to the webserver.

It works like a charm, actually. Except for one thing (I guess it isn't so much a charm as a twig snapped in half): How do I configure a remote system to automatically request port 9000?

The windows hosts file doesn't allow ports to be mapped, only urls.  This can be solved with 'relative' linking in my html/php code, but I don't want to reprogram it all (which isn't that much I guess).

Is there a way to map ports much like a hosts file so that typing in: http://webserver will forward to a certain IP AND port?

Not that I am aware of.

The port isn't over 9000, you'll have to change that.

www.opera.com can help you find instructions, I suggest asking in /comp/ on the popular troll support site world4chan.

Damn, I'll just re-code the site then :S

Durr, l2porttranslate.  Port 9000 can mean anything.  Today port 9000 = opera is for emos

No can do. Use port 80. You usually want port remapping to remap it to a port that's OVER NINE THOUSAND in your local network, not outside.

HAHAH, > 9000 :)  yeah, I just opened a port (not 80) on the firewall, forwarded that to a server, that server remaps to 80 and sends the traffic. That way, port 80 is still closed on the firewall.  Not unlike a tunnel.

The actual number is OVER NINE THOUSAND, but like I'm going to give that away, it's in the 10000+ range... and that stops at 65500 or something :)

you can do this with a port redirecting service. many dynamic DNS services offer this for free with their free dynamicdns domains but to use your own domain name you have to pay for it.

http://dyndns.org and more specifically http://www.dyndns.com/services/webredirect/

why not open 80 on your firewall?  virtualize your web server and GTFO

whats is birtualizing a web server? and wheris a HOW-TO?

Why not config the webserver to run on port #### and point the firewall to that ?

Also, opening port 80 and letting it point to your webserver does not present a greater security risk than opening any port and pointing it to your webserver.

The actual security risk lies within the webserver software, if it is secure, you are secure, if it is compromised only the user that it runs on is compromised, the rest of the system is still secure (except if you run windows, but then you wouldnt be talking about security at all anyway..)

In any case >>10, use www.opera.com, it's secure.

openBSD and apache. it runs in a chroot by default. you will not be haxd. I GUARANTEE IT.

I have a great idea, let's chroot init to ensure absolutely everything is securized against haxx!

ya chroot init to '/' zomg 100% secur0xrz

Well, you could do a number of things.

For one, you could simply have people visit http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:9001/ if you wanted to go that route - that will access port 9001 on whichever IP you choose. Or, you could have your router forward port 80 to port 9001.

This is assuming you're running apache on that port. If it's running on port 80, you can have your router forward external port 9001 to internal port 80 - basically the opposite thing.

I you can try http://portforward.com/routers.htm to see if you can do this on your router. My linksys and my microsoft routers can.

Wait, if I get you right you have this

(Internet)->(Your Router)>(A Server)->(Web Server)

Then you'd want to tell router to forward port 80 to the port that server was listening on, and tell that to pass whatever comes in on that port to the web server port.
