AVI to MOV Converter

I need a good recommendation on an AVI to MOV converter.  I just bought a video MP3 player (not an iPod) and its converter sucks at converting the audio. 

From what I've gathered most AVIs use mp3 as its audio compression, why would it want to convert it to whatever a MOV uses and down rate it?

And I just checked back on the originals of the video's I converted with the provided software.  Was a nice surprise to have my eardrums shotgunned by high pitched static.  Seems to only do this to mpeg formats though.
