slow network in XP

i just downloaded the SP2 upgrade for Windows XP Pro, and now it takes tthree times as long to load files from off the network.  i don't want to upgrade teh other computers if it will just make my network fail.

has anyone eles had this problem, and is there any way i can fix it?

Windows shares are slow because windows will sit there going "Hold on while I look for a WINS or DNS server..... Nothing yet, maybe it's just experiencing high latency, lets keep waiting lolz...... okay, I GUESS I'LL JUST USE NetBIOS NAMES, IF I HAVE TOO".
You can google for a registry fix for this. It will display IP addys instead of DNS/NetBIOS names, but at least you will be able to browse network recourses relatively quickly.

Windows filesharing would be way faster if it weren't for them.

Man, I get shitty speeds when tranferring files between two instances of XP compared to when I use FTP (something like 5x slower or more). What does that have to do with Samba?

My pet theory is the limitation is there to prevent a remote user throttling the response time for a local user on the host box.

just a clarification on the issue at hand -- i am well aware that Windows networking sucks goat eggs in general, the main concern i have is that the upgraded XP SP2 is taking significantly longer than the non-upgraded XP systems on the network to access the exact same files.  i would very much like to upgrade all the systems (if i'm stuck using Windows crap, i want it as close to 'secure' as possible.  which means upgrading.)  but the hit in network performance is unacceptable and needs to be taken care of first.  i have exhausted my resources trying to solve this problem on my own, and now have no choice but to request the ever-helpful anonymi to do my work for me.
