Quickly /comp, I need to decide between three 500 GB USB hard disks with equal prices: LaCie, Toshiba and Packard Bell. What should I get?

One of the brands above has an XBOX-HUEG lineup of external hard drives. The two others... does not...

Yes, that's what I'm thinking. LaCie is known for making all sorts of external drives. Toshiba is known for having some of the best laptops, although they don't do the hard drives themselves. Packard Bell is known for selling overpriced PCs. LaCie uses Seagate Barracuda hard disks, don't know about the others.

LaCie all the way.

So I've got the LaCie. A 500 GB USB (2.0) HD, read and write at 28 MB/s, good enough design, which seems to have a Seagate Barracuda (7200 RPM, 8 MB cache, 7.5 ns access time). Thanks for the tips. Now I can save lots of /d and hilarious comedy in it.

How do drive enclosures match "proper" external drives in terms of durability, shock-resistance and such?

Depends on what you buy. A good quality external case will be every bit as good as a good quality pre-built external drive. And at least if you buy an enclosure you can pick what drive to put in, rather than just some crap-ass 5400rpm Maxtor that the manufacturers could get cheaply, which is what you often get with cheap external drives.
