P4 vs C2D

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-23 23:44

Will a, say, 2.00gHz Core 2 Duo make a significant difference over a 2.4gHz P4 without overclocking? Relatively new to CPU upgrading, and I don't want to spend $200 for a tiny difference when that could go into my gfxcard fund.

recompile your kernel

Massive, massive difference. The Core 2 arch is infinitely superior to the P4 one, and it's dual-core, which is justification alone.

Do you people still laugh when you do this, or do you just automatically type it in and move on?

but buying a c2d without overclocking is wasted money, really ... it's very easy + generally without any problems.
ie my e6600 runs at 333 mhz fsb (that's 3 ghz core instead of 2.4 ghz) on air cooling with standard core voltage, and never goes above 55 degrees C core under load - that is 2x prime95, even cooler when gaming. (it starts throttling at 80 .. so it's not even near it)
imo you should not run any c2d under 333 or even 400 (for the 6300, 6400) fsb because you still only need 667 mhz (up to 333 fsb) and 800 mhz (up to 400 fsb) ram respectively, above that you need to overclock the ram too  .. should be worth investing a couple of days into some intarwebs research as to how exactly you should do it and a couple more bucks for a decent cooler. (ie ninja plus revision B)

(btw, take a look at gigabyte dq6 and asus p5w + p5b boards for that cpu, those are probably still the top 3)

i guess you only understood half of that, but whatever, look it up or don't, i was bored :P

Good to know - guess I'll get it and read up on overclocking then. I have a relatively cool temp in my case and a good set of fans, as well as very good memory.

As far as the mobo goes, this is somewhat of a "limping along with technology" computer. I came into some $ recently and I think I can get more out of my poor gfxcard by upgrading currently the oldest piece of junk I have - my CPU. Therefore, I don't have DDR2 RAM or a PCI-E card, which looks like the only options on both of those boards. I have yet to find a decent, moderately priced mobo with an AGP slot supporting C2D (or even Pentium D for that matter)

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-24 2:20

can't help you there, i don't even know if there are any decent c2d  boards with an agp slot.. might be better to save those $ a little while longer and then get cpu, board, ram, graphics all at once.
which would have the added benefit that probably the ATI dx10 cards would come out in the meantime and cause further price degradation.. still buying a board with an agp slot is a rather half-assed solution especially with focus on further upgrade ability in the future.

so the choice is:
buy only half the stuff and get an antique agp, save money now
or
buy everything now and be able to upgrade to quadcore and dx10, save money later

can't really tell you what to do, don't know your finances :P

Unfortunately, I am afflicted by terminal kopipitis. There is no known cure for this. Fortunatly, there is treatment available. I need a daily dose of lulz. I provide nubbz with my flammz and in exchange, I get my lulz.

I still laugh

there are no good dual core motherboards with an AGP slot, I've looked. You can't take your 6800GT with you, Dorothy. That's why I'm still using a P4.

ITT I spend $800 on upgrades :|

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-24 22:49

don't, take my word for it. the p4 is good enough for now

I thought long and hard and longer and harder about it and I determined this, even though I had the 800 to burn.

A Core 2 Duo clocked 1.86GHZ can do more than a Pentium 4 clocked 3.0ghz. They work so much harder, and clock speed is probably going to take a step out of the spot light. Although, if you have money to spend on processors, you can get a C2D to run at 3.5 and sometimes even 4.0 which will easily make any Pentium 4 eat shit and die. I bought an E6700 (clocked at 2.66GHZ) and I'll probably overclock it to 3.66. Just buy one of those ZALMAN heatsink/fan combos and an i680 motherboard with some good ram and you're all set. As for your video card budget? Next gen cards won't come in any flavor but 'top model' for a few months probably. Get an 8800GTX and savor it. A single 8800 is about the same performance as two 7900's in SLI.

hay what if I get a pentium D, and get a D/AGP mobo

success?

i don't need a 8800GTX, all i need is bf2142 running on medium. my 6600GT 256mb can nearly do that.

Overclocking is not for everyone.
List of people for whom overclocking is not (partial):
1. People who don't know the differences between P4 and C2.

That's a shame. Kill yourself.

Fail. Save, buy everything together, ??????, profit.

list of people for whom buying their upgrade parts separately and trying to plug them in themselves is not (partial):
1. People who don't know the differences between P4 and C2.

tbh everyone who can build their own system out of parts should have no problem whatsoever with overclocking, given they invest a little time, gain a little knowledge beforehand and are not total dickwads. after all we're on the intarwebs here, what with knowledge being free and everything, amirite?

Pentium D might be a little cheaper, but dollar/performance is crap compaired to Core2. You'd be better off getting a 939 system if your AGP card simply CAN NOT be replaced. After all, you won't be upgrading again anyways.

Overclocking: it's harder than just sticking things into the only place on a board they could possibly go and being grounded while you do it!
