I'm currently looking into Linux and Ubuntu has caught my eye. However, I've noticed that Xubuntu appears to be the same thing, but lighter on resources. If Xubuntu is so much faster, why is Ubuntu more popular? It doesn't sound like their are more features. Am I missing something?

why is Ubuntu more popular?
Ubuntu is more popular because the it is first release by Canonical, the company that funds Ubuntu. Also, Ubuntu works just fine for many people.

Not really. Xubuntu and Ubuntu are pretty much the same thing.  They just have different default desktop environments. If you get Xubuntu and wish to use GNOME, type in this command into the command prompt:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Thanks, but I've already read the wiki. Basically there are two questions I have:

1. How much harder is Xfce to use, and does it have as many features?
2. How much slower is GNOME?

Xfce started out being lean and fast but is slowly succumbing to bloat like all the other desktop environments.

It's still quite peppy and usable, though. Very easy to use.

Gnome isn't quite as slow as people make it out to be. It's definitely more responsive than KDE. However, I think Gnome's idea of a desktop is brain-dead. Trying too hard to not be Windows. The code underneath is a nightmare too, but, that only concerns nerds.

I think either will be fine for me. I'm fairly computer literate, but I'm not very technically minded. Can't do codes for shit. But I think either one will be fine for me. Ubuntu seems to have more support because of it's popularity- and it looks cooler. My machine will have enough memory to handle either of them. Maybe I'll obtain a Live disk for both and try them out.

Ahem, Gnome with Liferea, Gaim and some deamons running (beagle, samba) uses around 120 MB of RAM. Even 256 MB would be enough, if you play to actually USE the swap-partition. If you have >512 MB of RAM then there's no need to be worried

Try Kubuntu, KDE is worth it. Personal opinion here, though if I start a desktop war I'll be happy, KDE > Xfce > GNOME.
