trojans

How do you know when a trojan is actually gone?
I got one a day ago and McAfee gave a message saying it was deleted. A minute later a message comes up saying it has came back and cannot be cleaned, quarantined or deleted. I do a virus scan and nothing comes up. I do another virus scan and nothing comes up. I do a virus scan with a another virus scanner and nothing shows up. So is it gone? The same thing happened to me months ago but everything has been fine and when the second message comes up it just seems like my security system is just screwing around. I just want to be positive that it is gone or have a feeling that it is.

I accidently posted this in technology....

When the boot screen has the string "Linux" in it, the operating system is clean.

You have better options than McAfee, I guess. Maybe it's just acting retarded. Anyway, as long as you have a descent firewall, I  wouldn't be too worried.

Try booting into safe mode and then doing your virus scan.

you'll know its gone when you flush it.

Trend Micro has an online scan that might help you. McAfee isn't much of an AV app.

I looked it up and it was a low risk trojan.

I did that, it took a few hours but everything is fine. No trojans, etc.

I would think that. I don't like McAfee much even though it has done a pretty good job protecting me, this isn't the first time this has happened. I guess it is just  being screwy. And my subscription to McAfee should be running out in a few months. Should I just use some freeware virus scan/security system or pay for a different system? and what?

AVG is probably the best free AV solution out there right now, however if you're comfortable paying for it, I'd go with Trend Micro's AV software.  It's pretty good.

Don't change these.
