XP Pro Upgrade versus Full retail?

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-13 22:07

Forgive my out of date awareness on this but I've paid the issue no attention since buying W2K in 2000.
Since I own a legal copy of W2K can I use the Upgrade package as a cheaper route to gaining fully functional XP Pro? Any reservations or problems going this route?

W2K has a nasty Security patch that prevents closing out a profile and leaves Windows hung. They have a "suggested fix" but it's a joke and I need a secure OS.

In before linux, opera, and mac.
Using the upgrade version will not strip you of any functions at all

" the upgrade version will not strip you of any functions at all"

Perfect, thanks. I suspected not but there are a really large numbers of odd looking varieties for sale. XP with SP2 costs less than the same with SP1 at one site.
One site with a decent rating from Resellersratings has the Upgrade for under $100. There are cheaper ones but I suspect they're unreliable.

get aa full OEM version from Mwave or Newegg for $130, they require buying hardware so get a mouse or some cables.

"get aa full OEM version from Mwave or Newegg for $130, they require buying hardware so get a mouse or some cables."

To what advantage? My concern about OEM OS apps is that they used to look for the OEM's hardware at boot. If I could purchase a *clean" OEM copy I'd be delighted but what differences are there between OEM & retail?

I used to work at a PC repair shop, and we had one XP Pro OEM disc that we'd install on all the systems (they already had their own unique keys, obviously, this was just after we had to totally blast the system) and everything would always go smoothly.  Worst case scenario was calling Microsoft and validating it over the phone (5-10 min.).
OEM doesn't come with a box, and what I believe to be a condensed manual.  It's just a paper CD sleeve with disc and said manual, shrink wrapped.  That's the only difference I could tell between my retail copy I originally bought and the OEM copies we'd order from NewEgg and the like.

I've bought good stuff packaged that way from DirectDeals.com so it sounds fine. Never use manuals anyway, there are better references online.
  Thanks

Had to share this.
I've been in a Live Meeting connection with New Delhi for about 5 hours. Spent 3 hrs. on hold or getting dumped on the wrong support group with MS Tech Support before New Delhi stepped in.
I purchased XP Pro for $100 this morning but wanted to pursue a solution for the W2K issues too.
   One place offered this:
Windows Xp Pro Sp2 Corporate Edition + Office XP Pro 2003 Free
( Microsoft )
Price per Unit (piece): $49.99
   Thanks but NO!

MS-New Delhi (all support seems to be from Bangalore or New Delhi) has me running a 5 hour online scan thru Microsoft. They suspect something loading at Startup is a virus. It's mobsync which is sometimes a bug but generally is just the thing that syncs offline pages with IE.
New Delhi's servers went down twice during my experience so that dumped their remote desktop connection at the same time. If you were paying for support you'd better count on it costing $500 to a grand.

Very nice people but not a practical way to address a problem with an MS OS.

yes RLY, do not call Delhi, do not call MS. You may actually receive help but that would be accidental. Instead you receive bizarre approaches to esoteric possibilities all of which point to 3rd party causes.
Afterwards many indians will fill your mailbox requesting confirmation that they performed an adequate miracle.
