Players and Codecs

Ok, I have some questions about codecs and Media Player Classic.

Firstly, with MPC, is there a way of making it automatically detect subtitle files that are in the same directory as the movie and load them as soon as the movie plays? I've had to browse to the file and load it seperately, which gets annoying. Even BSPlayer does a better job here.

Also, it says I must use VMR7/9 renderless each time I want to load subtitles? It won't let me load them without using either of these.. yet some other media players can.

And so for codecs...
I have issues with some files that require XviD 0.9 to play properly. However, I also have files that won't even open when using 0.9 and have to use version 1. Is there an easy way of assigning the two different versions of XviD to the individual movies (like a special FourCC changer) or will I have to continually change it in ffdshow?

You're useless.
Next person please.

It's funny. 90% of people say Media Player Classic is the best player amongst everything out there. Yet within 20 seconds I found really annoying issues with it. If MPC is so fucking good, then there should be a simple way of fixing these problems.

I want these hardcore pro MPC users to tell me how to fix these issues before anyone suggests any alternatives.

Just use Video Lan Client. Its simple to use and I've never found anything that it wont play. If it dosent play something then its not a video file.

Have you compared it to the functionality of other players? And if so, what ones?

Sluggish, not user-friendly, and generally a lump of crap. If you were being serious please don't reply again.

TCMP or Zoom Player. VLC is utter shit at displaying softsubs. Reading your intial post, you do watch stuff with softsubs.

TLCP: Despite having the option of autoloading subs in the options, it doesn't. The subs looked pretty crap for some reason too.

Zoom Player: Requires DirectVobSub which I don't want to bother with. I had a bad experience in the past with that.

So far, BSPlayer, the player I've been using for a while now, is currently the winner. However, there's some files I have that won't play on BSPlayer properly.

I'm beginning to believe there just isn't one perfect player out there.

Look, MPC DOES autoload subs - this is a fact.  So it logically follows that if it isn't autoloading them when the settings say that it should, then there's a problem with your installation.  I suggest you get the 'insurgent' tool from CCCP to check your Codecs.  and get the latest MPC while you're there.  Then clean up  any shit Insurgent finds.  Other than that, there are some known bits of crap from RealPlayer, Quicktime and Nero which can interfere with MPC due to them overriding everything you try to do.  There's plenty of info on cleaning out these pieces of crap on the CCCP site itself - I know because I had to do it myself.
Lastly - don't have multiple players or other codec packs onboard - it may sound obvious but it seems some people like to have 3 different players installed 'just in case', but many players and codec packs just don't play nicely with each other.

Lastly - don't have multiple players
lol wut? Sounds like you don't have a fucking clue what you're talking about.

or other codec packs onboard
This only applies when really shitty codecs are involved.

No, you don't have to use VMR7/9 to load softsubs. More on that later, but I frankly don't suggest it.

As for codecs, learn how to configure FFDshow. Both Xvid and Divx have compatibility issues up the wazoo, and FFDshow does not from what I've seen. As someone already mentioned, CCCP is the easiest way to do this, but if you really want to do it yourself, find the ffdshow-20051129 release, get Haali media splitter, and VSfilter. Install the first two, and dump the VSfilter dll in the FFDShow directory, and register it (http://www.free-codecs.com/guides/How_to_install_uninstall_DLL_and_AX_files.htm).
Now, for the question about loading from the same directory as the video, VSfilter should do that, and if it doesn't, try playing around with the paths settings in the DVS options window (fire up a video with subs, look for a systray icon that looks like a big green arrow, right click on it, go down to "Direct Vob Sub (autoloading version)" and left click there, then go to the "paths" tab). And remember when I said "more on that later" about loading subs without VMR7/9 mode? Well, DVS does that also, only problem is that it buries the subtitle switcher in the "filters" section of the context menu.
