2 problems, need some help

PROBLEM 1:
A common situation is where a page is loading, and either loads too slow or just takes too long and eventually just stops loading.

I use internet explorer, and as far as I know, other browsers do the same thing. When a picture is loading, and takes too long, it decides to stop loading and cuts off the rest of the images. In some situations, thumbnails turn into little "x"s, pages get cut off, or it says "internet explorer could not find web page"

I assume this is a setting, for the browser or windows, that cuts off the recieving of a file over the internet in order to save bandwidth.

Can anyone tell me exactly what's doing it, why, and how do I modify it?

PROBLEM 2:
In 2004, I recieved a Hewlet Packard media center PC with Windows XP. About a year later, I purchased and installed a new graphics card for the system (at the time, unsure if they where compatable, but it worked). My computer was fine for months.

Problem is, the computer "shit the bed". It began to randomly restart, and said occurence began to increase. It would just keep shutting off, got to the point where it shut off every 15 minutes, and then I could never turn it back on.

Since then, I've had a new computer. However, someone I know wants to buy the old one, so I need the cash. When I booted it up, it actually turned on. It went to the menu where I had the option to start in safemode, last known config, et cetera. HOWEVER, choosing ANY of the options would begin to boot up the computer, and then it would restart, like it couldn't load properly.

I hit the right function button and tried to do a system restore, but it said it was missing some system32 file. Also, I noted that the menu didn't detect a single piece of hardware aside from the hard drive, and it is all still there.

My theories: The new graphics card somehow fuxxored my computer, or I got some kind of nasty virus that did the same, probably deleting my system 32 folder. PLEASE, give me some suggestions, because I need this cash

question 1.This is easy.. use firefox (im not an advocate, its just better) 2. sounds \tricky.. but one suggestion is make sure your fans are working on your video card and processor.. it might be overheating and shut off

I wont use firefox. IE is generally more reliable, and I strive for that, so I wont stray from IE7, however there should be away around such an option. I actually believe there's an option for it on windows XP, since the same happens on downloads (however, peer to peers and download managers generally don't have this problem, so I know there must be a way around it)

Also, all the hardware works fine. It wasn't overheating in the firstplace, I'm sure of that. I want to completely boot the system, but that requires a restore disk I do not have, and I can't get one made off of another computer, and nooone I know can give me access to a restore CD. If I go buy a CD or have professionals do it, the majority of what I'm making off of the computer will be gone.

You are retarded. If you use MSIE, don't come here asking for help. Stay away from shit and shit will stay away from you.

>>3 You really don't seem to want help do you?  >>2 gave you a very good piece of advice, and you simply say 'I wont use firefox.  IE is generally more reliable'.  On what piece of crap research did you base that answer?  The whole reason for browsers like firefox (and recently Opera too) cutting heavily into IE's installation base is that, contrary to your strange opinion, they ARE MORE RELIABLE.  Also, in the OP, you say 'I use Internet explorer, and as far as I know, other browsers do the same' - again with the crap.  Don't assume - CHECK.
It may well be that it isn't directly a browser problem, but that a piece of malware got onto your system.  If that's the case, you probably got the malware in the first place because IE let it onto your system.
Suggested steps:
1. Get hold of these 3 free pieces of software:
  - Spyware blaster - install this and update it, then enable all it's protections.
  - Spybot search and destroy.  Install, update and run (choose to innoculate too)
  - Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE personal.  Install, update and run.

These three together should dig out a lot of crap on your system that IE has probably let through.  Once your system's clean, go get either firefox or Opera and install them - looking at them you'll hardly notice any difference from IE when you use them, though they have more and better options.

Lastly run/update those free pieces of protection software about once a fortnight.

problem 1. are you on dialup? if so, probably just timing out. there might be some setting in ie for that but i dunno. IE elitism? lol.
problem 2. at first it sounded like overheating. then it sounded like a bad driver. and now it sounds like a bad hard drive/corrupted files. could have also been a virus. get a windows cd, reinstall. that is srsly your best option.

Thanks for being the only one not flaming me for IE. I have cable, and the pages time out due to some akward setting, EVERYTHING does it.

For example, gamers know that if they take too long to connect to a server, the game will simply give up and disconnect. My browser is doing the same, but on my laptop it happens much too soon, giving a page generally 30-40 seconds before it gives up, as opposed to my desktops 2-3 minutes.

As far as your second option goes, I'd LOVE to get my hands on an HP restore CD for windows XP. However, I can't get my hands on one, geek squad and other "professionals" would charge me money, and bestbuy claims that it would cost me 100-150 dollars to get it from the manufacturer. I don't want to spend too much money.

I've been using IE for a while. I used Firefox at the same time, and in the past I've used netscape and AOL.

It's been in my experience that IE is more rugged. I've never faced a problem, havn't had a virus since AOL started handing out anti virus software (something I didn't have in the past), and basically every page I've ever visited has loaded properly. I often here, even here on 4chan, people complaining about how Firefox won't load the page, and keep looking for advice on how to fix their problems.

I've never had reliability issues with IE, and I don't have any viruses (I have Spybot search and Destroy, McAfee, and trend micro for the PC. There's no viruses or spyware on my system, I KNOW this isn't a browser or spyware problem, simply some kind of setting, and it must have been changed on my laptop or set so low for some necessary reason since it's a laptop.

1: switch to firefox, really :|
it way best, more customizable, faster and also have options that IE doesn't have :|
if you don't want, stop whining, just go to settings and set timeout time to 60-80 (if you're using cable i'll suggest over 250)

2: emule is your friend, so is bittorrent

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-03 11:31

get opera or firefox, OP
seriously

you will be "flamed" (i'd say rather "advised") on 80% of the world wide internets to change to a real/decent browser

Where in settings can I find that timeout option? I looked under internet options and couldn't find it.

Also, arn't you entitled to your fucking opinion? I ask a non-browser related question, and just get flamed for using my browser. It's like going to a mechanics shop and seeing if they'll take a look at your truck, when they refuse you service because you don't drive a fucking Ford.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-03 15:05

>>11 No, it's more like driving a Steam Wagon into a mechanics shop if you're using IE and asking them to put a turbo on it.

problem no. 2:ok here is the problem 1 it is most likely not you browser but it is a possibility plus from a programers point of view ie is NOT better than fire fox and fire fox is NOT better than ie i personally use fire fox i like how it is more open fire fox has pros and con than fire fox doesnt have and vice versa on another note aol anti virus stuff for a good coder can be easly by pased and most of the time you have a virus you dont know it till something goes bad

what you have is a virus or failed hardwear mabey you unpluged it while it was on or a power surge happend  for the failed hardwear fot the virus there are a number of ways one is installing bad softwear (like vcodec and stuff like that) or something you did caused a bug in winxp to create a virus

the only solution (unless you actually understand the registry) is to reinstall if you do understand the registry (which i doubt cause you asked how to fix you problem) just run reg edit and delete/add what you need to

problem no. 1: this is most likely spywear but could be a virus not to hard to fix just run the programs >>5 told you about

also as >>10 said linus is also a good solution linux is free adn can be installed on most systems and has less cahnce of getting a virus but for so sorry you cant use ie on linux (unless you a skilled enough coder)

1.    Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2.    Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings
3.    On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4.    Type KeepAliveTimeout, and then press ENTER.
5.    On the Edit menu, click Modify.
6.    Type the appropriate time-out value (in milliseconds), and then click OK. For example, to set the time-out value to two minutes, type 120000.
7.    Restart Internet Explorer.

^^will give you a timeout of 2 minutes anything higher than that will require new keys be made. but if you have cable, that sounds moar like a rendering issue.

also, im not trying to flame here(oh god how i want to though), when was the last time you tried firefox? you say ie is more reliable, but you're the only person in the last year that i've heard say that.

I couldn't even get through the first paragraph. If english is not your native language, you need to work on your grammar, sentence structure, and most importantly using punctuation.
if english is your native language, just gtfo.

To the OP: Everyone is suggesting you try Firefox for a reason. Might be a good time to look into it.

For problem 2, symptoms immediately point to a bad hard drive - boot looping, as it's called (when Windows crashes as it's loading up, restarts the computer & continues that cycle) is almost always indicative of a bad hard drive or possibly bad RAM as well. Go search google for a disk-bootable hardware diagnostic program, burn it to a CD or put it on a floppy disk and run at least the RAM and HDD tests. If they pass, press F10 when the computer starts up and shows the BIOS screen (the HP logo) and you should be able to run the recovery from the restore partition of the hard drive. If that doesn't work, HDD is still likely fucked, but you can get restore CDs from HP for like $40 if you call them (1-800-HP-Invent).
