How much server cost would

there be for the chans to switch to https?

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-27 3:32

every board should do this
imagine if you were put on some watch list, maybe you're arab. the the government has your isp watch all your traffic. you spend a fun loving day on /b/. then in plaintext in your traffic are phrases like SET US UP THE BOMB & BIN LADEN. knock knock

you're goin to jeil

double

I would think just the time to reconfigure the software.

ssl would add to the cpu load, and also the added transfer overhead.

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-27 8:11

>>6
how much more overhead and cpu? enough to slow 4chan noticably?
how about a smaller #chan that doesn't have much traffic?

This is an excellent point, and teaches the lesson that you shouldn't make stabs at technical questions at 4AM.

Seriously, though, why are we talking about this? What advantage does HTTPS bring?

ITS INCERPTED

no one would be able see what you are posting or reading on #chan without comprimising your computer or the #chan server

If you live in constant fear of that, I suggest you calmly evaluate the real potential consequences of that. Growing a pair would also solve the problem.

I think this would be a great idea, because, you know, the government can't simply demand that Moot tell them who posted that CP on 2006-12-27 23:05

And even if they could, Moot would go to jail for your sins rather than give them your IP

i have no doubt moot would give up people who post illegal pictures, im not interested in protecting them. but what happens if your connection is being monitored and you are just innocently browsing /b/ and some jerkoff posted cp and the thumbnail is downloaded to your computer?

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-28 6:31

at some schools or workplaces, there are admins who aggregate all images that pass through the server

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-28 8:19

>>13
in that case you should wear a tinfoil hat so the government mind control beams won't affect you

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-28 16:28

maybe ima cryptoparanoid, but we are getting to the point at which such surviellance is easily implemented.
hash all known cp and common thumbnails(like standard imageboard size) of that cp
hash all incoming/outgoing images

I wonder this too. I don't need HTTPS to encrypt what I'm posting as I don't post shit. But I'm worried when I accidentally find shit thumbnails I couldn't possibly know of before, and I'm also worried that our HILARIOUS COMEDY (e.g. nigra, Nevada-tan, etc.) could be taken the wrong way by people who don't know about our inside jokes.

WE DON'T NEED A SERVER

SOMEONE NEEDS TO WRITE A PEER-TO-PEER DHT-BASED OR SIMILAR TECHNOLOGY HTTPD-LIKE PROGGIE WITH SSL SUPPORT AND WE CAN HOST IT OURSELVES

WE COULD CALL IT FREENET

>SOMEONE NEEDS TO WRITE A PEER-TO-PEER DHT-BASED OR SIMILAR TECHNOLOGY HTTPD-LIKE PROGGIE WITH SSL SUPPORT AND WE CAN HOST IT OURSELVES

Good idea!... But wait... to do that we'd need a seperate computer hooked to the internet with the sole purpose of relaying and monitoring incoming and outgoing traffic... now what do they call those again?

>I'm also worried that our HILARIOUS COMEDY (e.g. nigra, Nevada-tan, etc.) could be taken the wrong way by people who don't know about our inside jokes.

1)A good part of /b/ considers the ability of strangers taking our inside jokes out of context a bonus, especially if it's offensive.

i was just coming here to post this. it would be like a darknet 4chan. no more server costs. high encryption. anonimity. to find each other we can just post small torrents on a public trackers. that torrent could be the very program you need to run.
hell, we might be able to just write an azureus plugin.

each client just passes along the most recent threads its seen(how does the comment/rating system or chat work with azureus?)

Use Tor and never post anything (you can't read the imageboards, but why would you want to go there?).
