user-friendly linux distro?

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-24 17:03

I'm sick and tired of fixing my mom's computer problems because she uses Windows ME which crashes on a whim and gets adware/trojans every other day and blames me for it.

All she does is e-mail and play Yahoo .swf games, so, aside from the fact that Macromedia doesn't seem to want to release a Linux-based .swf plugin that's up-to-date and supports audio, I still am going to put Linux on her computer and tell her to fend for herself.

I use Slackware, but that's for computer literate people.  What other distros out there have made Linux more idiot-friendly so I never have to be bothered again?

Her computer also has a wireless network card... are those distros those distros set up to "Just Work" with all sorts of hardware configurations or will it require some config file digging or module compiling like with Slackware?

Flash 9 beta was released a while ago for lunix. It's worked awesome for me thus far. Maybe if you were more "computer literate" you would have been aware of not only that but also the various distros that get CONSTANT MEDIA HYPE for being user friendly.

wireless networking under linux is still fickle, regardless of the distro.  depends entirely on whether or not linux drivers are available, or windows drivers can be wrapped reliably.

ubuntu is quality, though you should probably pick whichever ubuntu flavor uses your desktop environment of choice so you can more easily help her later on.  also with ubuntu you'll have to install a few extra packages right at the beginning to get non-free multimedia working.
