scanning avi's for viruses

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-17 11:27

just a quick question, but would be advisable to filter out .avi, .rm*, .mp3 files from my virus scanner?

has anyone ever heard of anything hiding away in them?

Yes.

unless you regularly execute video files, yes you should filter them out.

Video files can contain carefully crafted bytestreams which exploit vulnerabilities in crappy media players written in C or other stupid language that uses pointers.

Theres no real reason to filter them, heuristic scanning takes virtually no time and there /can/ be nasty stuff inside media files. Player doesnt matter, its the codecs that have bugs so whether you use MPC or WMP or whatever, theyre succeptable.

Don't change these.
