How to get WEP key from windows XP?

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-15 18:21

Hey guys. I got a wireless card for my laptop and it works, however I need to know the WEP key. My brother, who set up this wireless network, is currently out of the country so I can't ask him to help.

My dad's laptop has windows XP and is configured to use our wireless network. So it has our WEP key. Though after looking through the windows XP wireless config thing, I could only get it to show me the key in ****s and not characters. A guy on another forum says that it is possible to get it to show you the key, though.

How do I get the WEP key from windows XP, so I can put it into my other laptop and therefore connect it to the wireless network?

And before you tell me to check the wireless router for the key, I don't have the password for the wireless router either.

I would really appreciate help with this.

Thanks.

And before you tell me to check the wireless router for the key, I don't have the password for the wireless router either.

It could be printed on the router.

Otherwise, http://www.archlinux.org/ and pacman -S aircrack.  Then run aircrack and spend five minutes to crack the WEP key (or sniff it, I don't know what aircrack does).

I had the same problem once. I solved it by using Proactive System Password Revocery. It will dig up all the passwords (and WEP-keys) on your windowsXP box. Very convenient. You can either buy it, or try finding it via a torrent or emule (i found it on emule).

WEP keys can be cracked in 10 minutes even on cheap hardware.  Why are you even using it, instead of WPA?

I'm the OP.

I tell you, man. It wasn't up to me. It was my brother who set up this wireless network, after all.

Anyway, someone on another forum told me about some tool, "wzcook", which can be used to recover WEP keys from XP's Wireless Zero Configuration utility.

This got the key from my dad's laptop, and now everything is working pretty well.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, everyone.
