does photoshop have a batch process that will let me do things like resize and add borders and stuff? so far ive only been able to make them all save as a different file type.

Yes, you have to create a custom action and run that as a batch operation. Create a new action in the action pane and start recording. Open a sample file, perform whatever operations you want on it, save it and close it. You can then run the action as a batch operation from the file menu. From within there, you can choose to process an entire folder (ideally you should specify a different folder to save the output files so you don't overwrite your originals if the results don't turn out the way you expected). Pretty simple, really.

I can't stand the Photoshop batch stuff, it's a lot of work to do operations that should be easier. ImageReady is only slightly better, but again I don't like the process of creating your settings, saving them as an action\droplet and then running your images through them.

Fireworks seems a lot more intuitive to me, you can resize and recompress and rename and stuff easily, plus if you want to do more advanced stuff you can still use the Fireworks equivalent of recordable actions.
