MySQL = shopping cart?

Someone told me MySQL is where you learn how to set up those shopping carts that are on online stores.  I think he is wrong, I'm pretty sure those places must pay a third-party to provide those services.

but while we're on the note, what programming language is used for setting up secure networks for shopping carts- for an online business?

MySQL is a Database software, I'll spell it out simply. It's storage. A cleaner and faster way then using files for storage, designed for records.

EG:
user_id user_name user_pass

Programming languages like PHP/Perl access the databases for the information needed to "display" a proper HTML/XHTML page

I know nothing about programming, and will go learn about what a "database" is, and how to manage one, as well as how this http client-server interaction stuff works, and how I can make it do what I want via serverside scripting.
