Switching mobos w/out OS reinstall?

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-10 21:51

Can it be done when switching from a compaq mobo to an asus A8R-MX? I found a solution using SYSPREP, but it requires reactivation. If the number on that reactivation is exhausted I would have to call microsoft and they would probably direct me to compaq who would redirect me to microsoft etc. So is there a way to avoid this?

its not worth trying, the windows reactivationthing would show up because of the change to your hardware configuration. it would be a hell of a lot less trouble to just to a fresh install

With Linux, it's no sweat - as long as you have a kernel that supports the new motherboard.

With Macs... well, you know, lol.

With Windows, it's easiest to backup all your data and reinstall.  If it turns out that you have to call Microsoft, do so (assuming it's a legit copy).  Don't mention Compaq at all, and you should be alright.

And when I say 'backup' I mean make a real fucking backup.  Expect anything on your current OS harddisk to be lost.  This time, when you install, set up a separate data partition (as in, install onto a ~20GB NTFS partition, and have a separate partition for data).  This'll also make recovering from AIDS easier.

Don't change these.
