Is AGP still usable?

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-04 19:27

Right now I'm running a crappy GeforceFX 5500, was thinking of upgrading to the latest and greatest AGP card so that I could play FEAR and such.  Thinking about it though, I could alternatively upgrade to a PCI-E board and mediocre graphics card for about the same price (no ATI, sadly, as I run a P4).  However, around about this time next year I'll probably be buying an entire new computer.  Is it worth it to bother to do an extensive upgrade, or is AGP still good enough to get away with buying a AGP card?

still usable but for the best AGP card it's not worth the price if you're going to get a new machine eventually.

I figure it'll still be a year, and a new card would let me play FEAR/Oblivion/Prey.  Think it would be better to just get a 360 for now?

QFT

Also, do NOT buy a board with AGP AND PCIe.
Those PCIe-slots are 4x, which means that they are NOT even half as fast as AGP 8x.

Depends. If you just play games on your comp and do not really do (gephics-using) work with it and do not go on LAN-parties, then yes.

don't get an agp card

I got an agp 6800 GT about a year and a half ago, and I question the decision to not upgrade to PCI-X. The life of a video card is significant. Your machine should be top-of-the-line for about three years after an overhaul like processor/moboard/ram/videocard, if not more

Not if you get a board with an ULi M1695 chipset! Those support AGP8x and PCI-E 16x natively.. Besides if you had both, on most boards, didn't they just leech PCI-E bandwidth for AGP so the AGP speed would suck.. while normally the PCI-E slot could work at full speed as long as no AGP card was used?

I'd choose PCI-E card, I'm using an old AGP card myself. Tho you could easilly get 6600GT or 6800GT for AGP and be able to run FEAR/Oblivion okay, just won't be using that when you upgrade later, not many new boards come with AGP that I know of.. and AGP versions of cards cost considerably more
