Hardcore antivirus needed...

Name: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot !kxgLmy51bM 2006-11-03 0:44

Well, my computer is now a cesspool of viruses. It's nothing really critical. It turns off and reboots as normal. But whenever I get home after leaving it on all day, I'm treated to about 87 pop-ups. Nothing works. What are some good, possibly free/trial antivirus/antispyware programs I can use to eliminate (or at least lessen) the infestation?

complete spyware/popup rescue kit

AVG (as above) - antivirus

Lavasoft Ad-aware (also as above) - antispyware

BHODemon - some stubborn programs require this for removal, believe it or not a installed Browser Helper Object can register itself to startup with explorer.exe

ProcessExplorerNT (from Sysinternals) - kicks task manager's ass, can tell you what programs are starting the svchost.exe's

Autoruns (from Sysinternals) - control what programs run on startup and discover where they are at

Firefox 2 and StartupMonitor - so this shit won't happen to you again!

my combo for safer computing on Windows:  hardware SPI firewall, AVG (antivirus), Spybot S&D (spyware immunization and cleanup), SpywareBlaster (additional spyware immunization), ewido (additional spyware cleanup), HJT (spyware analysis), Firefox, K-Meleon, Thunderbird, Google, and careful computer usage

If you have a trojan/worm, you WILL have to do a manual cleanup.  It's the reason you see people posting their HJT logs everywhere - so other people can tell them what to do.  This can involve using a variety of specialized apps and registry editing.

Also, always keep IE up-to-date to a point (as in, fully-patched IE6 or IE7 is fine, fully-patched IE5 or IE5.5 is not possible and therefore not fine), but never knowingly run it as your web browser.

my combo for safer computing on Windows: To not use MSIE + to kill anybody that gets close to my computer.

I use a combo of most of >>9  and  >>10
I have AVG (fast and effective with a low overhead) + SpywareGuard and Spyware Blaster.  I use Sygate personal firewall (I'm still using Win2k - no inbuilt firewall).  Once a fortnight I run Spybot S&D followed by Adaware to catch anything that got through (usually nothing).  Oh yeah and I wouldn't go near Intardnet Exploder (6 OR 7) - firefox is still much safer (until the rest of the world starts using it of course).

What I was trying to say in >>9 about IE was that you really should keep it patched, even if you never use it.  Any innocuous little app that uses IE as its html rendering engine or downloading engine (including explorer.exe) is susceptible to the same exploits as the copy of IE you have installed.  That's how crappy and dangerous IE is.

I never run IE, but I always keep it patched and I turn on the IE immunization features of Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster.

Or, you COULD just set IE to dummy proxy settings.

Better yet, slipstream IE outta future installs altogether.
