External HD problems

Name: Pope Superman I 2006-10-31 13:36

I dropped my external hard drive earlier today and when I got home from high school (not underage B& BTW), Windows recognized it as a "local drive" with the letter of F, which differs from the norm as it had the WD logo as it's icon and I had dubbed it WUGGUMS. The warranty is still valid for it, but I'd rather be able to recover my data (several years worth of image macros, hentai, and porn). I cannot access the drive through windows or DOS. It is a FAT file system, so recover will not work with it. CHKDSK, however, can read the disk. Halp me recover my data, /comp/!

I've been considering linux, as all I do now is browse 4chan anyway, but I really like that last option.

What would I do with GIMP?

Whatever you'd do with www.opera.com.

If that was a subtle hint for me to go-a seaching for or drawing the pron, hentai, and image macros, then /b/ is my only option. I didn't have a sauce for most of that stuff.

Seconded.

If there's anything remotely resembling a FAT32/NTFS partition left on the disk, GDB can find it.

your data is probably physically gone

when you drop a magnetic platter it Fucks Shit Up

According to dos, the filesystem is gone, however I have found a freeware data recovery program that is getting the job done, albeit slowly. At the very least, I have my ROMs.

P.S. Why exactly did Microsoft change windows so that it is no longer Dos dependent?

for these reasons:
 - performance (ntfs is better)
 - no 4gb filesize limitation
but mostly because:
 - fat32 doesn't have any notion of file permissions or acls

But could they not have modified dos to eliminate those problems?

'cause when they retained DOS dependance, they ended up with the shithole that is Windows Me (Millennium Edition).

>>19
But how would I profit?

Name: Pope Superman I 2006-11-01 20:22

Anyone?

Profit!!! is not a result of following the steps; it is a step in and of itself. Your problem will only be solved if you follow the instructions and Profit!!!

Uh, yeah, they did modify DOS to support that.  They called it WINDOWS.

Uh, no, WINDOWS is not DOS. DOS is not a filesystem.
FAT is a filesystem. FAT has filesize limitations.
NTFS was created. NTFS supports file permissions & ACLs.

If you car does not support wheels, sticking an engine in it will not make it roll.

yes, but not until I read your post

Don't change these.
