So, just a little while ago I got this iPod and I plug it into my computer and it won't start charging or doing anything. What am I doing wrong or what should I do?

IIRC, USB (even 2.0) doesn't carry enough power to charge an iPod.  You may need to charge the battery first.

There's nothing especially wrong with USB. It was originally intended just for connecting keyboards, mice and other low-bandwidth devices, as a complement to Firewire which was intended for higher bandwidth stuff (external hard disks and the like). Intel only stuck to USB because they didn't want to pay the licensing fee for Firewire. USB 2.0 is a close match with Firewire for transfer rate (and if implemented properly (instead of the crap-ass, broken way it's done on Macs) it can in fact outperform Firewire), but it can't provide anywhere near as much bus power as Firewire.

Well, I fixed my iPod. I went to best buy and told them I bought a peice of shit, they gave me a new one.
