CD-Rom is messed up

Name: Dax 2006-10-21 3:09

So my cd-rom drive hasnt been visible to my computer for several weeks.  The ribbon cable's fine, its opens and closes, my system recognizes it as existing, but all it says in device manager is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"  I cant roll back the drivers because apparently there arent any to roll back to, and it wont update for the same reason.  Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times, to no avail.  I'm not quite sure what the hells wrong with it.  Anyone have any ideas that could possibly help me?  Be much appreciated.

search for new drivers on the internet. or you must have got a driver cd or floppy with the drive.

Does the installation wizard find the drivers at all?

I'd try renaming the "INFCACHE.1"-file in "Windows\Inf" to "INFCACHE_old.1" and then redo the installation. Some people say this might lead to Windows not starting anymore, but that never happened when I did it and I don't see any logical reason for this to happen, but then again: it's Windows.
Another method is to copy (note: Not move! It's to prevent you from doing something stupid.) "cdrom.inf" and "cdrom.pnf" to a different folder (let's say "C:\temp") and then explicitely name that folder during the installation.

I'd try deleting the DLL cache ("C:\WINDOWS\System32", remove quotes).
