Capped cable line?

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-12 12:01

For a couple of days now, it seems like every few hundred MBs I download through a torrent client is causing my internet to crash.
I'm curious if it could be my ISP capping the bandwidth, and if so, if there's some sort of workaround for such? I heard from a friend that if I buy a new modem instead of using the ISP's complimentary one it could fix it (is this true?), but otherwise I'm completely in the dark.

What the fuck does "causing my internet to crash" mean? Elaborate. Describe the symptoms.

yes, there are workarounds.
yes, they are illegal.
yes, cable companies can VERY EASILY tell when someone is uncapping their cable line.
it's not as easy as just buying a new modem though. although that is a good idea anyways, complimentary modems aren't that great.
thats especially true for DSL (i know you said you have cable, but heres a short rant of mine). fucking verizon. fastest DSL ISP you can find here in cali (since they own the DSL stations, and any other ISP has to get their service through them anyways), but i mean, sending us a modem thats incompatible with their service? come on. in 2005 they sent us the SAME EXACT fujitsu model that we got back in 1995 when we started using DSL. and it didnt fucking work. so they sent us another. me and my dad said 'fuck this' and went and bought one at fry's that worked perfectly.

2 months later, verizon sent us a notice that they had realized that the modem they sent us was incompatible with their service, apoligized, and asked if we would like a new one. we said 'no thanks, leave us the fuck alone, just give us le intarweb and all will be fine'

k im done

Sorry about that, I'm up too late.

But anyways, this might be important, so;

It detects and connects to the wireless internet, saying it's connected at whatever MB/s it's usually at (11 mbps?), and it can connect to websites and torrent trackers, but no data will send or receive (IE; it shows that it's loading a website, but nothing shows up and it eventually redirects to a page not found, or; connects to tracker and tells me torrent information, how many S & Ls are swarmed/connected, but DL and UL remain blank.)
It takes about an hour to restore, and suggested fixes i've found on other sites don't work (resetting router, resetting modem, refreshing IP, rebooting, repairing connection, etc.)
