my computer fucked itself the other day so i had to reinstall XP. is there a way to restore my registry to what it was before the fuck up, because i really dont want to wade through all my folders and delete programs by hand only to reinstall them

that's why you have a windows partition and separate partitions for programs, so you can just install them over the old installation for registry matters, but keep the old settings. no deletion or anything.

You should have saved registry dumps for the applications you want to keep configuration for.

And this is why a global registry blows. Separate INI files in the application directory or some per-user configuration DIRECTORY (not dot-shit files in ~) is the proper way to do things.

usually, yes. there are programs though that keep settings etc in files, those should be fine w/o reinstalling. that's why you should download archives w/o shitty windows installer whenever possible.
