Dear /comp/
What is the best video card I can get for around $300?
I'm looking at this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2456679&Sku=B52-7858

I must admit to having pretty little knowledge in this area, so I wanted to know if I could do better.

Oh, man! I really want one of those S3 Virge cards. They fucking rock!

I want a Super VGA card for Christmas.

S3 Virges are great, but man, they are expensive. I'll stay another year with my 6800GT before buying one.

If there ever was a 286sx, it wasn't made by Intel. What is this strange beast you refer to?

Bitses, I bought a Voodoo yesterday!
How cool can that be

286SX made by Cyrix computers.

The Chip here says AMD microsystems.
its fitted directly to the board as an old DIP instead of the PGA extractable gear.

HOW DO I SOLDERED 287 MATH CO-PROCESSOR TO MOTHERBOARD?

Ive also got a boxload of S3Trio64V+ cards (roughly 25) and a stack of old monitors.
Recently tried to setup a multi display (6 monitors+cards) in an old linux box.
Xorg dropped support for the drivers and VESA/VGA generics give fuxx0rd results :(
I failed hard.

lols @ olde gear hax

I have a cyrix 386 chip around here somewhere, and a math co for a 486sx

you really want the old matrox cards though...still supported by everything.

You mean a normal 486 chip that doesn't have the coprocessor disabled. The 80487 was a scam.

"Intel convinced vendors to include a new socket on the motherboard that could accommodate the 80486 SX and 80487 SX as an expensive hardware upgrade option. Unbeknownst to the consumer, the 80486 SX was an 80486 DX with a non-functional math unit (though later versions of the chip actually removed the math unit). The 80487 SX was a full 80486 DX with a couple of pins relocated on the package -- to prevent consumers from using the cheaper 80486 DX as an upgrade option."

You did not fail. The board failed. I forgot what chipset the trio was, either the Viper or the Virge. They were both god awful but the Virge was worse. Those video cards have aids, throw them out.

I just read the rest of the post. This is like Thread of the Year or someshit for this forum. You all win hard.

They run on windows 2k pretty well.

The problem is i cant seem to specify IRQ and memory addresses so they all wind up conflicting :(

There are drivers available in oldskool xfree86 that deal with a multitude of the ramdacs, i just really couldnt be assed getting every dependancy to configure and make them.

I keep them around merely because i may one day wind up on a complete 4 day "tweak bender" and get around to actualy setting up the entire system properly.

PS: i just found an old ATI RAGE PRO TURBO 8mb AGP card.
I can fondly remember patching the shit out of Halflife to use that badboy.
