Why is it that 1280x960 is proportionate to 1024x768, but 1280x960 looks terrible on my moniter. i use 1280x1024 and it looks fine. whenever i shrink large wallpapers to fit my screen in photoshop i half to cut off the sides because i cant shrink the height as much.

It has to do with the ratio's of those resolutions.

Buy a second monitor. This way, you'll be able to dump photoshop and use the GIMP.

but why is it that 1024x768 works fine on my moniter but 1280x960 doesnt even though they have equal ratios?

try 1280 x 1024

even though 1280 x 960 seems the same, i'm pretty sure it's meant for widescreen monitors.

i used 1280x1024 on my old 4:3 CRT, and it worked fine.

Many LCDs have 1280x1024 as a native resolution even though it is 5:4. 1280x960 is actually 4:3.

Don't change these.
