No-Cd XP Home reformat

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-29 0:06

Alright so I want to reformat my XP home computer (I've done all the file backups so I'm ready to go)but unfortunantly I do not have the cd (I bought this computer with XP already in it).

There's a product key sticker on my computer but I'm not sure how to reformat with it. Any help is greatly appreciated :D

(I might be able to get a hold of a friend's cd if that might help, but it's already used for his oomputer)

Simply torrent an XP Pro Install Disc (they're common as rocks) and reformat using it.  Make sure you've got a serial # written down before you start so you don't screw yourself.

Just use your friend's CD. You can use the product key on your computer when prompted. Put the CD in, and follow the prompts....

Potentially very wrong. A lot of OEMs use customized versions of XP tied to their block of product keys. You can't, for example, use a Dell XP CD in conjunction with a HP product key sticker. It's only if you're using the generic, non-branded OEM version in both cases that you can use another CD (the generic CD won't install using a manufacturer-specific product key, and vice-versa). You can tell if your product key sticker has the hardware manufacturer's name on it - if it does, it will only work with their XP CD.

That's a generic, non-manufacturer-specific label then. A generic OEM CD should work (in fact, you could even download one). The big manufacturers get custom versions made, though actually the only significant change, ignoring them adding their own logos and bundled software, is a few bytes in a particular file that identifies their manufacturer ID which is then tied into the license key validation. On Windows 2000 you could change that file to render a manufacturer-specific disc workable with a generic license key, or even without a license key altogether, but no such hack exists for XP, to my knowledge (what with product activation and all that crap).
