Preferred antivirus software?

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-26 12:37

What do all the cool kids use to keep crap off their systems nowadays?  I've been using AVG Free for awhile now, but I'm wondering if it's up to snuff compared to commercial antivirus software.

Common sense. You should try it sometime.

Yeah, that "I'm not stupid, so I'll never have any problems" attitude works SO damn well in practice.

Enjoy your AIDS.  Seriously.  Work in IT for even a few weeks and you'll quickly realize just how easy it is to become infected, even if you *think* you know what you're doing.  Especially if you don't keep everything up to date.  Tell me, when was the last time you scanned your computer for malware?  How do you KNOW you aren't infected?

You know how to avoid hepatitus, but you still get your shots, right?  You know how to drive, but you still have insurance, right?  People like you guys are just arrogant and ignorant.  None of my Windows machines has caught anything in three years, but I still have AVG and Avast just in case, BECAUSE I'M NOT RETARDED.  Just please don't tell me you plug directly into the modem because you "know what you're doing".

I use AVG, Windows Defender, Spybot, Kerio, and Spyware Blaster all at the same time.

I work in IT. Only I'm not stupid. And why wouldn't I keep sensible network applications up to date, especially when they autoupdate?

The last time I scanned it? About 1 month ago, routine check, didn't find anything, as expected. Next coming in a few days. I know I'm not infected because I'm not doing anything stupid.

You know how to avoid hepatitus, but you still get your shots, right?
Biological defenses aren't perfect, and I can't see or feel it in any way until it's too late, unlike software.

You know how to drive, but you still have insurance, right?
Insurance is because morons could crash me.

People like you guys are just arrogant and ignorant.
Think whatever you want; you waste time and computer resources on antimalware, and we don't, that's the only difference because none of us will be getting malware.

I still have AVG
In my Windows 2000, I have AVG too, but it's a waste to have it resident. I scan what I need manually (write only media: once, portable R/W media: always, downloads: anything containing executable files or scripts not coming from very reliable sources). Of course, the GUI is a waste of time; I have scripts to quickly scan stuff.

I don't do anything stupid and I'm not infected. I do have AVG installed but I don't run it, only use it to scan files manually.  I don't use any sort of malware protection either.  I scan my computer fully once every month or two to make sure nothing slipped by, and so far it has worked well for me for the last 3 years.
Seriously, no matter what kind of anti-virus or anti malware protection you use, if you have idiotic browsing habits and open every attachment you get through email you will get infected very quickly.

Avast! is nice.

And everyone knows the reason Macs and Linux don't get viruses is because no one gives a shit.  They're only like 4% of the market.
