Old Ethernet Card

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-21 0:24

Alright /comp/, I got myself an old ethernet card for 99 cents tonight. And you may be wondering why this is good, well it has a 15 pin connector, which my computer doesn't have (if you remember, I'm that fag on /g/ with the SideWinder gamepad issue). Aside from  general wear from the contacts and dust that's collected over 10 years, it looks like it's in good condition. Is there anything I should check before putting it in?

if there's a boot rom on it, pull it, or disable boot from ethernet in your bios

other than that, i can't think of anything

I'm not too sure what boot rom is, but there is an empty slot for a chip, so I'm assuming it's not there. I'm also worried about having two ethernet ports, though I'm guessing that's just stupid and shouldn't matter.

you won't have problems with two ethernet ports unless you try to put them both on the same subnet.

Alright, anything else I should know before putting an 11 year old PCI card that's been sitting around for a while into my computer?

Make sure the contacts are clean? Not really. I think PCI has undergone revisions, but I've never had a problem with it.

>>1 an old ethernet card for 99 cents
clean new ones can be had for $0.88 USD (airlink101)

Yeah, but like I said this has a 15 pin connector, and since I already have a gamepad like that I rather not spend another $15-$40 on a USB one. Still, if it has a 15 pin like that, I guess I should look for one.

Don't change these.
